Honorary award for oncologist and clinical pharmacologist Jan Schellens

The Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities (KHMW) has announced that the Saal van Zwanenberg Honorary Award 2017 is awarded to Prof. Jan Schellens,  Professor at Utrecht University’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and internal medicine oncologist at the Netherlands Cancer Institute - Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. The Dr. Saal van Zwanenberg Honorary Award is presented once every two years in recognition of a scientist who has made a contribution in research that has directly or indirectly led to the development of new pharmaceuticals or related processes. The prize includes a monetary award of 25.000 euros.

With 800 scientific publications to his name and 61 PhDs earned under his supervision, Prof. Schellens’ academic impact is enormous. He is the driving force behind countless clinical pharmaceutical studies, many of which were ‘investigator initiated’. Also he is closely involved in training students to become pharmacists and clinical pharmacologists.

In addition Prof. Schellens plays a central role in the social debate about new, promising, but expensive anti-cancer medications  via interviews, TV appearances and opinion articles. Besides he was involved in formulating policy in the Medicines Evaluation Board and the Committee on Pharmaceutical Aid.

The Dr. Saal van Zwanenberg Honorary Award will be presented to Prof. Schellens at 24 November 2017. Previous winners from Utrecht University were, amongst others, Professor Emeritus Berend Olivier (2012) and Prof. Bert Leufkens (2008).
